DRE's Jessica Karll Named District Teacher of the Year

Jessica Karll, a 3rd grade teacher at Discovery Ridge Elementary, has been selected as the Wentzville School District Teacher of the Year for 2012. Candidates are judged on the respect and admiration of students, parents and colleagues. Selection is also based on their ability to inspire and educate students of all backgrounds and abilities. “I feel very blessed to work in a District that’s so dedicated to kids,” said Mrs. Karll. “It makes me proud to know that I’m doing what’s best for students each and every day. I have the resources and the great people behind me here, because I couldn’t do it alone.” Mrs. Karll has taught in the District for four years, and helped open Discovery Ridge. She serves as the school’s Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) chair, and her classroom has been selected as a model for District professional development. In 2011, Mrs. Karll’s students and the Discovery Ridge third-grade team achieved MAP scores in both Math and Communication Arts that were among the top scores in St. Charles and St. Louis counties.
She co-chairs the school's CharacterPlus character education efforts and serves on the District Communication Arts Committee. “Jessica is one of those individuals who was born to be a teacher,” said Discovery Ridge Principal Laura Bates. “Her joy and infectious commitment to progress bring out the best in our students and staff.”  As the winner of the District Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Karll is now eligible to compete in the Missouri Teacher of the Year program, which is conducted annually by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year program. During the District Teacher of the Year process, each school in the District also selected their Teacher of the Year:

Public Attends Open Houses to Discuss Proposed School Assignments

Parents came out to attend Open Houses at Holt High School, Timberland High School and Frontier Middle School on three separate evenings in the past two weeks to discuss the proposed new school assignments for the 2012-2013 school year. A School Assignment Committee comprised of parents from each school in the District has made recommendations that include which elementary schools will feed into which middle schools and ultimately, our three high schools. Community feedback is being collected from the Open Houses and will be presented to the School Assignment Committee, which will reconvene in January to discuss the feedback and finalize their recommendations to the Board of Education. Based on discussions at the Open Houses, the District has comprised a list of frequently asked questions that can be found on the District's website. Additional information on the committe and its recommendations can also be found on the home page of our website. Questions can be directed to the Administrative Services Department at 636-327-3800 ext. 20330 or info@wentzville.k12.mo.us.

Parents Attend Information Nights Regarding
1 to 1 Technology Initiative

English One Students Scheduled to Receive Netbooks Following Winter Break

zhdf

Parents of students presently enrolled in English I courses at our high schools attended netbook information nights presented by the District's Technology and Curriculum Departments on November 30th (Timberland) and December 7th (Holt). During the meetings, administrators shared how (starting in January) this initiative will impact student learning inside and outside of the classroom. Over 100 parents came each evening to hear Dr. Susan Gauzy, Rich Wilson, Greg Lawrence and Nichole Nolan explain the program to parents and students. The night included information on 21st Century Learning, the technical aspects of the netbooks, student handbook information, and how this 1 to 1 Technology Initiative will transform student learning. The group also answered parent questions after the presentation, and the Technology Department had netbooks available for everyonehdf to get some “hands on” experience. Over 1,000 netbooks will be distributed to students in English I classes the week of January 9th to be used for school work. Students will be expected to charge their netbooks at home overnight and bring them to school each day as they will be incorporated into a number of their classes. At the end of the school year, netbooks will be turned in for the summer to be updated by the Technology Department and re-issued to the same students at the start of the 2012-2013 school year. Students who are issued netbooks will continue to use them over the course of their high school tenure. More information on the initiative can be found on the District website.

DRE Pilot Robotics Program Receives $1,000 Grant from Exxon Mobil

sh

Students in grades 3-5 at Discovery Ridge Elementary had an opportunity this fall to compete on a robotics team thanks to a pilot after-school program aimed at stimulating an interest in science, math, technology and engineering (STEM) principals. The hope is that early exposure to this type of hands-on learning for young students could potentially blossom into future career paths. Exxon Mobil awarded the school a $1000 grant to continue the pilot program.  DRE formed and prepared a team of ten students to compete in the First Lego League, a robotics program that is internationally recognized by over 60 countries and has over 20,000 teams.

The First LEGO League has a yearly theme, and this year's theme revolved around finding a solution to better preserve a specific food from spoilage or contamination.  DRE students had to identify a problem by doing thorough research on a specific food and asking experts for advice on what they knew about it and what was already being done presently.  They also had to design and program a robot to autonomously maneuver around a thematic
game board (in this case food) using LEGO and LEGO Robotics parts.

"Our entire mission was for students to have fun working cohesively as a team using science, math, and technology and solving problems through discovery, and then more discovery," said DRE teacher and robotics advisor Joe Williams.  "Although the students only had ten weeks to work together, they persevered through many obstacles and never gave up by trying new ideas and sharing them with one another."

In mid-November, the team competed at a championship qualifier in University City, Missouri.  Williams said that although the team did not qualify to advance and compete at the state level, all of the students from the team had a great time and are enthusiastic to compete next year and do even better "Engineers always have the attitude to keep striving for better ways of doing things, and our students definitely had that passion," said Williams.

District Entry Wins Best Float in Wentzville Christmas Parade

The District received 1st Place for its decorated bus entry in the annual Wentzville Christmas Parade that was held on December 5th! The Downtown Wentzville Business Association presented a check to drivers Jill Brown and Dave Schwartz who were representing the Transportation Department at the association's December 8th meeting.

The Principals in the parade included Laura Bates, Geri Buss, Dr. Todd Kraft, John and Matt Schulte, and Assistant Principals David Straub, Holly Ellis, and Kelly Stratman. The children lining the parade route caught the spirit and a lot of candy from their school administrators! Our new school bus was decorated beautifully by the Transportation Department, special thanks to Alan, Jill, and Bob Brown, Dave Schwartz, Abby and Lexi Ehman, Linda and Larry Hale, Jeanne Longwell and Paul Lang for all of their efforts. Also a big WSD thanks to School Board member Pat Hacker, Director of Transportation Jen Simpson, and Director of Community Relations Matt Deichmann for their participation. Second place went to District parents Kevin and Rebecca Pendergast who donated their prize to the District's Holiday Assistance Program for our families in need. Third place was awarded to the Heritage Elementary float and PTA Vice President Dawn Peters was on hand to accept the prize with daughters Grace and Lexi. A young GTE student who got on his bus Monday morning after the parade told his driver that he liked him and all, but he wanted to ride the "MAGIC school bus" he saw in the parade!

District Students Participate in NFL's Play 60 Challenge

Students in grades 3-5 at Boone Trail Elementary were invited to take the six week NFL Play 60 challenge, and were given a Rams Play 60 workbook to track their activity minutes each day. NFL Play 60 is the National Football League's campaign aimed at encouraging kids to be active for 60 minutes a day in order to reverse childhood obesity. During physical education classes, students participated in various fitness activities throughout the challenge and were encouraged to keep their journals updated. Idhfn addition, Boone Trail 5th graders made a video showing the importance of daily exercise, as well as what activities they were doing as part of the challenge, and submitted the video to the Rams organization to be used for educational purposes.

Adam Hofer, a 3rd grader at Boone Trail Elementary, was named a student ambassador for the Rams in conjunction with the Play60 challenge. "Adam continually displays his commitment to live a healthy lifestyle in both the community and classroom," said BTE Physical Education Teacher Adrienne Pivac. He had participated in the NFL Flag Football, NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick program, and the NFL Play60.

Adam, along with 17 other ambassadors throughout the St. Louis metro area were recognized at the Nov. 27th Rams vs. Arizona Cardinals game. In addition, Adam and his parents were invited to a private practice at Rams Park in Earth City the Friday prior to the game. Adam received a Rams Play60 jersey, sweats, 3 tickets to the game, enjoyed pre-game practice on the field with the players and cheerleaders, and ran on the field as the players were being introduced. Adam, with the other student ambassadors, stayed on the field with the team during the national anthem. The group also got to meet singer Nelly and have pictures taken with him.
